Beware of the shoot!

Every time we have a shoot I realize that every film project is really dangerous.
This are the dangers that can occur while shooting:

  • fall into a trench\hole in the floor
  • bump into lights\set decoration left unattended in the dark
  • get stuck in the middle of nowhere (for example in a broken down car at 6 o'clock)
  • get stuck somewhere when you are in a real hurry (like a traffic jam when you have to deliver costumes for shoot asap while the ad calls you to ask to buy milk and cereals for the dop because he won't work without it)
  • get injured while working with animals on set or those around set
  • freeze to death in a cellar\cave\cold winter day (happens too often)
  • the last day before shoot curse (this is when things go missing (actors\set decorations\props), forgotten (like you have to buy a bunny for shoot at 7 o'clock on Sunday), changing (script\storyboards\director's and dop's mood))
  • and finally the last but not the least - to burn breakfast for entire crew

Of course everything mentioned above usually happens with the luckiest filmmakers ever - like me. It's a miracle how things turn out just fine in the end.
For example had my 80 year old amateur actress not gotten into a hospital the day before the shoot, i would not have found a very nice lady and a professional actress for my "LATE" short. She did not speak anything but Czech, so I had to speak half Serbian (which in my case is very poor) half Russian to her. Apparently, the result was worth it, as the film got selected for Short Film Corner Cannes Festival 2011.
Another example, we were shooting a music video for A-Banquet. That day we had problems with electricity, the lead singer and almost froze to death in the cellar, director got beaten by a wolf hound that was guarding the place where we were shooting. And finally, at 6 o'clock in the morning our car broke down 2 hours away from Prague. They managed to make it work somehow but the director (the only capable of driving person by that time) fell asleep while driving and we almost crashed.
Of course now all of it seems really funny. But when there is nothing to laugh about when there is a wolf hound biting you or when you realize that it is 6 and no one is around on the country road.
But all is well that ends well and you can remember the days and actually be proud of yourself. Especially when the result is worth all that troubles.

inspiring creativity

being creative is always a source of inspiration. well, i mean if you are editing some project you tend to turn to similar things in search of an example. and then you suddenly see how pieces of the puzzle should be placed all together. most of the times it has nothing to do with the example you used.

during the shoot you simply do not have any time to look at things, but even think. you just have to make a decision fast. and so you just do it without spending any second to think that you are not capable of something. you have to be creative.

during the last shoot we were filming a web film for printing company. we had around 5 hours total to shoot everything, and so when we had just 5 minutes left for ready product 4-stored warehouse, we asked a guy working there with a crane-car for help. we attached the camera to the car-reels with gaffer tape, and then the car took it 40 meters up. it was quite an experience, especially because i hoped, the camera would not brake. it did not. and as a result we got a cool shot for the video.

new russian teenage subculture: what is so wrong with that?

yesterday discovered that a new subculture is emerging here in Russia. i am not very observant in this things though, but i was really pissed because of how people react on it.

this subculture is called vanilla girls (in russian it is ванильки) and it is popular mainly among teenaged girls. they are romantic, like London/NY, coffee, photography, wear buns, glasses, uggs, t-shirts "i love NY/London", listen to pop-rock.

well, okay. what is wrong with this? teenagers are meant to be rebellious and romantic. whats is so wrong to have a romantic blog about a guy, listen to music white sitting on the window and drinking coffee? what is so wrong that as a result thousands of internet trolls make a diversion, calling vanilla girls the ugliest creatures ever?

remembering myself at same age when there was no such subculture as ванильки. well, i was not wearing uggs and buns. but i was dreaming of moving to London, i had a t-shirt like that, i was constantly drinking coffee, making pictures, i wore glasses (and am still wearing them due to my eye sight), liked listening to sad music while walking in the rain. and i was in love, writing poems, having a special blog for that. so what?
any girl in 16-20 and even up needs to dream. of London, Amsterdam, beloved, whatever. and also i guess any one of us liked to try on a new mask in order to find himself.

so really what is so wrong with that?
besides, the so called "vanilla" photos are beautiful. btw photos like that are not new. around 5 years ago i spotted smth like that on veer.com
